No compromise

October 27, 2021 by albertscharbach

Why do I beat around the bush? I have questioned how explicitly Christian my art should be, but a few days ago I have come to see that there cannot be compromise in talking about my art. How can I forsake Christ, the source of all that is good? I have talked in convoluted and vague ways about, for example, drapery painting. Today in morning prayer I read Jeremiah 1. O God, I pray put your word in my mouth, your Word. I am a poor beggar before you, my God.

Art Notebook, 2/03/2020

Isaac wrote this while working in a secular art program at Davidson College. An observer associated with the college called it a work of grace when the posthumous art show organized by the students and faculty put Isaac’s explicitly Christian themes in full light. The show is online here: https://www.davidsoncollegeartgalleries.org/uncate…

My one and only purpose

What could approach Iconography?

Each of my days you kno

I give myself to you

Comfort me in my weakness

Help me to seek only you

Peace that is not of this world

“This world, I will leave.”

“My shift is over

The earth is not my home

At this time last year

No reservations

“It was worship.”

How I long for your Spirit

How little I know

Gift upon Gift

Let me die daily

Sacred Heart of Jesus

The permanence of God’s beauty

Only where God leads

I just listened

Come to me when you are weak

Ashes Like Bread

Journal entries written on hearts

A direct encounter

Awaiting the joyful light

Oh what a joy

Close to Jesus on the cross

A glimpse of what is eternal

Close to our humanity

He will come to meet you

God Provided a Ram

Dependent on Grace

“My day is yours”

My soul finds peace in you.

“Your grace is sufficient”

“If you give me anything, let me love Jesus.”

“I am your servant” — painting the Baptism of Christ

Help me to withhold nothing (“Teach me to be a great saint”)

A willing soul

Ready to receive you (an Advent prayer)

“An intense desire.” A longing to depart from this fallen world.

“Why are you afraid?” Isaac’s final journal entry

“Moved to tears: the meaning behind Isaac’s gravestone”

“I am your servant”

“The reward of distracted prayer” (November 27th)

“The end of all beauties” (November 21s

“Memento mori” (November 18th)

“Root out my sin” (November 15th)

“Let me suffer” (November 12th)
