The ‘New Normal’ of Eastertide

April 13, 2018 by albertscharbach

How was your first week of Easter?  After Christmas, there’s widespread feasting and relaxation, at least until New Year’s Day.  But after a momentous Holy Week, we usually experience a big … return to normal.

There’s no national holiday, and for most of us, work picks right up where it left off. This can feel like a let-down after the Triduum and the most important feast of the year. But we can also find grace in this return to normal.

In John 21, we read that after the original Holy Week, the apostles returned to fishing. But this is where Jesus met them–in the midst of an ordinary routine.

First, Jesus gives them an extraordinary catch. He meets them in ordinary life in order to cultivate extraordinary expectations.

Then, he stops to eat breakfast with them. That’s all!  John doesn’t say anything else about Jesus’ appearance.  But it’s extraordinary, because Jesus is with them in the ordinary.

When you continue your routines this Easter, know that you complete them in Christ. In this way, Jesus can meet you at work and while you eat breakfast.  How can that change your perspective?  How does the resurrection effect the way you live now?

May all of life have resurrection perspective as it becomes life in Christ.
